Beware of imposters…Some members have contacted TRS to ask whether TRS employees visit members’ homes to discuss TRS benefits.
TRS staff members do not go to individual members’ homes. If someone contacts a member and asks to meet in the member’s home, that person does not represent TRS. In such cases, members should advise TRS. If a TRS member or retiree belongs to an association, whose membership consists of TRS members or retirees, it is possible that the association may provide its membership list externally, including to sales people. Persons representing such organizations should not be confused with actual employees of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. TRS guards the confidential information of its members and retirees and does not release names, addresses or other information to external parties.
Certain organizations have also sent post cards and e-mail messages to members asking for personal information. These communications, often sent by groups with names similar to TRS, promise print outs containing information on taxes and retirement for those who respond.
TRS does not send such cards or e-mail messages to members
. They are normally sent by private, for-profit groups wishing to sell members something. They should respond to these cards and messages only if they believe such information would be to their advantage and they do not mind receiving follow-up information. Before divulging personal information, members should consider how it may be used, including what assurances they have that their information will be confidentially maintained rather than sold.
